Rationale:
The purpose of my publication ‘Spore’ is to educate and inspire curiosity about fungi, encouraging people to look beyond common stereotypes and appreciate their beauty, diversity, and ecological importance.
Fungi are often misunderstood, viewed solely as brown, beige, and undesirable pests. However, they are far more than that—exhibiting a remarkable variety of vibrant colors, intricate forms, and essential roles in our ecosystems. Through my publication, I sought to challenge these misconceptions and foster a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
These stereotypes are intentionally reflected in the initial visuals of my publication, which feature a subdued palette of brown and beige paper stock and intentionally unremarkable page layouts. However, as the user engages more closely with the book, they uncover hidden, vibrant, and psychedelic animations revealed through AR. Each animation is inspired by the unique forms of different fungi species, offering a striking contrast to the initial, muted presentation.
This transformation from mundane to extraordinary mirrors the way fungi are often overlooked yet reveal their fascinating complexity upon closer inspection. By combining tactile materials with digital interactivity, my publication celebrates the beauty and diversity of fungi, aiming to spark interest and challenge preconceived notions among its audience.
